What does innovation mean to BlackBerry and how does it impact your business strategy?

We operate in a fast-moving industry where innovation is a necessity. At BlackBerry, we are focused on constantly developing new solutions that allow our customers to work more efficiently, effectively and securely whether they are at work, on the road or at home. Our new BlackBerry PRIV is a good example of how we’re innovating to meet customer desires. It’s a smartphone that sets a new standard for security and privacy in the popular Android ecosystem.

How do you encourage and instill a culture of innovation within your organization?

BlackBerry began as a startup company that invented mobile computing. I can say without reservation that the spirit of innovation, the drive to continue to improve, is alive and well in this company. Every part of BlackBerry is driven by the desire to create the most productive, secure and private solutions in the mobile marketplace – that includes revolutionary smartphone features, software that makes critical business and government communications more secure, and coming up with new ways of enabling devices to communicate with one another through the Internet of Things (IoT).

What is it like to lead one of the world's top 100 most innovative companies?

It’s an honor and a challenge. It’s an honor because of BlackBerry’s position as an innovator and leader in mobile communications. And it’s a challenge because we’re in a fiercely competitive industry. We must constantly challenge ourselves to come up with new ways to innovate that keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in secure mobile communications.

What do you consider to be your most innovative assets?

While there is no question that the iconic BlackBerry smartphone changed the world, we have our focus on the future. What’s exciting to me today is how we are building on our heritage of delivering secure mobile communications solutions to expand our reach. For example, just last week we launched PRIV, the industry’s most secure Android smartphone. With our QNX subsidiary, their software has been deployed in the infotainment and telematics systems of more than 50 million cars on the road. We are managing devices across all mobile platforms to ensure secure mobile communications for our enterprise customers. All of these assets position us perfectly to be a first-mover in the emerging Internet of Things space, which is going to be a huge opportunity for us. And with one of the youngest patent portfolios in the industry, we are very well positioned to continue to innovate and lead in these areas for years to come.
